Using Web 2.0 Tools in the Classroom


I read a great article titled “Web 2.0 Tools in the Reading Classroom” by Savilla Banister that discussed the many benefits to our students within the classroom. The article mentioned that in order for students to be prepared to step out into the workforce, we as educators need to prepare them for use in the latest technologies. The article states “students must learn to step into the global conversation and develop competencies in using the technological tools that support collaboration, media literacy, and evaluation.” (Banister 2008). This statement should be considered greatly when planning to implement technology into our classrooms. Specifically the article closely examined the use of blogs and podcasts. Through the use of these technologies it was noted that there was an increase in “fluency, creativity, and ownership in the reading/writing process” . (Banister 200) Fluency is one of the most crucial aspects for increasing students’ reading ability. Therefore it only makes sense that if students are engaged in using these technologies to showcase their writing and reading skills the more time they will spend practicing which in return will increase their fluency.
